Home to around 18,000 people, former state capital “Milly” is located at a prime spot along US 441. Mild weather combined with an abundance of Southern culture and hospitality make it, like the rest of the Peach State, a great place for seniors. Of the 9.8 million current residents, almost 2.8 million (28.6 percent) are over age 50; more than 1.5 million (15.8 percent) are over 60; more than 676,000 (7 percent) are over 70; and almost 243,000 (2.5 percent) are over 80. With the average life expectancy trending at 78.8 years, many older Georgians and their families will have to face pressing concerns over how to best handle their healthcare.

There are a few options, all under the control of Healthcare Facility Regulation (HFR), a division of the Department of Community Health (DCH). HFR is responsible for quality health care planning, licensure, certification, and supervision of the state’s affordable senior housing, assisted living communities, home health agencies, hospice services, nursing homes, personal care homes, and private home providers. While nursing homes admit residents on medical referral, personal care homes are defined as those that offer certain services for two or more adults who are not related to the owner or administrator by blood or marriage. These are synonymous with assisted living communities, except they serve 25 or more residents and employ certified medication aides.
